Unless appropriate support is provided, a child’s distress can last well beyond the end of the conflict. Research on war-stricken children’s mental health shows that almost all children identified bombing and shelling as the number one cause of psychological stress. Left untreated, children become more fearful and nervous, frequent bed-wetting, aggressive behavior, and difficulties in learning are all symptoms of prolonged stress among children.

Toxic stress – a type of stress response that occurs when children experience intense, frequent, or prolonged adversity without adequate support. A continuous state of toxic stress can have a lifelong impact on children’s mental and physical health and increase the likelihood of adverse effects on children’s development and health problems later in life.

New Horizons Trauma Care Response supports children’s mental health by providing trauma responses directly geared toward children with art therapy sessions.
